Background
Dr. Schloss is the Director of Electrophysiology for The Christ Hospital. He specializes in electrical issues of the heart and is actively involved in new medical device design and clinical research.

As a local Cincinnatian, he was born and raised in the Kenwood suburb of Cincinnati, where he was valedictorian of his Indian Hill High School, class of 1982.

Dr. Schloss found his medical calling through an interest in engineering. When he was in high school, he had ambitions to become an engineer. Then he discovered that Northwestern University had a pre-med honors program that would allow him to pursue an undergraduate degree in engineering while simultaneously securing him a spot at Northwestern University Medical School when he graduated.

He went on to do his postgraduate medical training at the University of Pittsburgh as an intern and resident, in internal medicine and then he stayed for a fellowship in cardiology. He then completed an additional two year fellowship in electrophysiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He joined Ohio Heart and Vascular Center in 1997.

Dr. Schloss enjoys the problem-solving component of electrophysiology. In his practice, he deals with device therapy for heart rhythms and heart failure. He treats slow or fast heart rhythms with pacers and defibrillators, and treats congestive heart failure patients with implantable devices. He also treats abnormal heart rhythms with medications and ablation.

Electrophysiology has seen many advances and innovations in the last few years. Dr. Schloss has been directly involved in many of these “firsts” in electrophysiology. He implanted the world’s first bipolar transvenous left ventricular pacing lead and also the world’s first pressure sensing implantable cardiac defibrillator. He was named in a peer review as one of the 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 Best Doctors in America®.

Away from the hospital, Dr. Schloss pours as much of himself into his family as he does into medicine. He and his wife, Kendahl, a former school teacher, have three children, two girls and a boy. “I like to listen to the same music that my kids do. We started listening to kid’s pop together, and then I went through the stages they did. Now it’s alternative rock, indie music and some punk that my high schoolers like. So my kids and I have grown up to music together. It keeps me young.”

Dr. Schloss also listens to music when he runs. An avid runner, he started running eight years ago. As of now, he’s run seven marathons, including two Boston marathons in 2007 and 2009. His best time is 3:20, which qualified him for the Boston race.

Professionally, he is driven by his responsibility to his patients. “I see a lot of patients every day. To them, that may be the only time they see me all year. So every patient I touch needs to get high-quality care from me, every day. The most rewarding experience is when a patient comes back, feeling better due to the help of my care.”
